Food Safety
The Council is responsible for enforcing National and European Union food legislation in most food businesses operating within the District

We aim to ensure that all food produced and sold in Craven is safe to eat and that all cases of food poisoning are investigated.

Where we feel businesses have excellent food hygiene standards, we grant our Good Hygiene Award. See the link opposite for the latest list of recipients.

We do not enforce the food legislation in slaughterhouses and approved cold stores, this is the responsibility of the Meat Hygiene Service, an agency of DEFRA.

The Council has produced an Enforcement Policy for the work in Environmental Health in support of the Government initiative towards business friendliness. This policy is based upon the principles of Consistency, Fairness, Proportionality, Transparency and Objectivity. The Enforcement Policy is available to download, and we welcome any comments and suggestions about it. These will be considered and will inform the next review of the policy.

Trading Standards

North Yorkshire County Council Trading Standards advise on the rights and responsibilities of consumers and traders, relating to the supply of goods and services. They investigate complaints and test the safety, quantity and quality of goods.
