Food Complaints

All food complaints relating to food safety produced or sold in Craven are thoroughly investigated by this Council.

Complaints about food composition, sell-by dates, labelling etc are dealt with by North Yorkshire County Council Trading Standards.

The investigating officer will collect the relevant information so as to decide the most appropriate course of action to take, in line with our enforcement policy.

Informal Action
In most cases informal action is taken in order to prevent recurrence.  In informal cases the investigating officer will give you an explanation of the outcome of the investigation and, with your agreement, disclose your details (i.e. name, address, etc) to the relevant food business.

Formal Action
This will be considered where appropriate which may result in a Formal Caution or a prosecution.

The investigation of food complaints can be time consuming and may take the investigating officer several weeks or even months to collect all the information necessary to decide what action is appropriate.

We may need to contact the Company's Head Office, their importers, manufacturers or suppliers. In addition, we may also liaise with the local authority where the food is made to gain further up-to-date information.

We will not seek to obtain or otherwise negotiate any compensation or redress on behalf of the complainant.
