What is a Game Dealer Licence?
It is a licence granted by us to individuals or businesses. It authorises the licence holder to buy game from any person authorised to sell game under the Gaming Act of 1831 and it also allows the licence holder to sell game in his licensed premises.
Two licences are required to trade in certain game species:
- Council Licence
- Excise Licence
Legislation
- The Game Act 1831 requires dealers to be licensed in England.
- The Game Licences Act 1860 extends the provisions relating to the sale of game to Wales and Scotland.
- The sale of venison is covered by separate legislation under the Deer Act 1991 (England and Wales) and the Deer (Scotland) Act 1959.
Council Licence
A licence is required from us to take or kill game and to deal in game within Craven.
The council licence will specify the business premises.
We will register the business premises for public health purposes.
The council licence must be renewed annually.
Excise Licence
- An Excise Licence may be obtained from the Post Office.
- It is a condition of issue that a council licence be produced at the time of application.
- There is an application fee which must be paid at the time the application is made.
- An excise licence is required for each business premises that will deal in game.
- The excise licence must be renewed annually.
