Creating Healthy and Vibrant Communities Through Culture and Sport
Creating Healthy and Vibrant Communities Through Culture and Sport is one of the Council's Corporate Priorities.

Cultural and sport are essential for a healthy and vibrant community by contributing to well-being and overall quality of life. We recognise the role that culture and sport play in developing Craven as a prosperous and sustainable rural community.

We aim to place culture and sport at the heart of future plans for achieving our vision for the District; helping to create active, distinct, cohesive and safe communtiies that residents, visitors and workers enjoy and celebrate being a part of.

Which services are delivering this priority?

  •  Craven Swimming Pool and Fitness Centre is providing a range of acilities and activities, including access for disabled people.  Sports development is improving quality of life through getting people active and involved in sports.
  • Economic Development are working in partnership to promote and develop tourism within the District
  • Craven Museum and Gallery is providing a diverse range of exhibitions, heritage and cultural facilities which entertain, enthrall and educate.  Arts development is promoting Craven's rich cultural life and supporting key arts projects.

What action are we taking?

The Council's Corporate Plan 2008-2011 identifies the Council's key goals. Areas for action focus on:
  1. Improving health through sport and active recreation
  2. Promoting tourism within the District
  3. Increasing access to Craven's Arts and Heritage

Over the next three years, we will work to improve health through sport and active recreation. We will work in partnership to implement initiatives as part of  ‘Craven on the Move’ - Sport and Recreation Strategy to increase participation in sport and active recreation and deliver exciting plans to increase opportunities to participate in outdoor adventure activities throughout the District.

We will continue with our work to actively promote tourism to the District; working in partnership to implement new initiatives as part of the Tourism Strategy and delivering key projects to provide outdoor activities, festivals and events, and the cultural heritage offer.

We will improve access to Craven’s arts and heritage offer through the delivery of transformational plans to create a ‘cultural hub’ at Skipton Town Hall, increase access to and involvement in museum and gallery collections through the delivery of the Craven Phoenix Project and improve our approach to the management of conservation areas throughout the District.
