Craven Bereavement Services have now set up a memorial registration scheme and only mason who are registered can work in the Council managed Cemeteries.
Many people have asked why was it done?
All Local Authorities across the country must carry out regular safety checks on their memorials, and must take remedial action on those which are found to be unstable. Elsewhere, nationally, there have been serious injuries and tragic deaths caused by loose headstones toppling onto adults and children.
In some cases work to put the headstones right involves making temporary arrangements to prevent accidents. The Council will make every effort to contact grave owners where they are known and inform them of any action taken and what the next steps will be. Only memorial masons registered with Craven District Council may repair these memorials
In some instances, ownership details are not known to the Council, for example when the original owner has died or they may have moved home, and may not have informed the cemetery of their new address.
If anyone regularly tends a grave, but is not the owner, the Council would like you to contact them so that our records may be updated.
The work of re-instating the district's headstones continues to be a priority for the Council. Work has already started at Ingleton Cemetery where previously laid down headstones are being stabilised in an upright position. Meanwhile, public safety in cemeteries remains an important issue and the Council must continue to monitor the condition of headstones.
