Council Tax is a local tax payable on occupied and unoccupied domestic properties. The money collected is used to help pay for services provided by

  1. Craven District Council
  2. North Yorkshire County Council
  3. Parish Councils
  4. North Yorkshire Fire Authority
  5. North Yorkshire Police Authority

Usually the person who lives in the property will pay the Council Tax, providing it is their sole or main residence and they are over 18 years of age.

If more than one person lives in the property, then it is the person who comes first on the following list who will pay:

  1. owner who lives in the property
  2. tenant who lives in the property
  3. any person who lives in the property
  4. owner who does not live in the property

People who are joint owners or joint tenants will be jointly and severally liable for the bill.  Married couples, and those living together as husband and wife, will also be jointly responsible for paying the bill whether or not they have an equal interest in the property.

If there are more than two adult residents, the amount payable per property will stay the same.  However, if there is only one resident, a single person discount will be granted.  This discount can also apply if all but one of the adult residents are not counted for the purposes of the Council Tax.

In some circumstances a property can be exempt from Council Tax altogether - see Council Tax Exemptions.

If you are on a low income, you may be able to claim Council Tax Benefit.  You will need to download and complete a Benefit application form, sign it and return to us.

There are several ways you can pay your Council Tax.

If you are moving, please let us know as soon as possible by completing and returning our Change of Address form, or by telephoning our Customer Services Department on 01756 706288.  (Please note that calls may be recorded for training and monitoring purposes).
