The full Council Tax Bill assumes that there are two adults living in a dwelling. If you live on your own, you will be entitled to a single person’s discount of 25%. (You should still claim this discount even if you are receiving Income Support, Job Seekers Allowance (Income-based or Contribution-based), or Pension Credits, as any benefits you may be entitled to will be calculated after the discount has been applied).
A Single Person Discount application form is available to download.
Certain people are disregarded and are not counted as resident adults in a property if they are:
- people in prison or detention
- severely mentally impaired
- school pupils and people for whom child benefit is still payable
- school leavers and certain 18 and 19 year olds
- full time students / student nurses / apprentices / youth trainees
- non-British spouses of full-time students
- registered foreign language assistants
- patients resident in hospital, hotels or nursing or care homes
- care workers and residential carers
- people with a relevant association with an International Headquarters and Defence Organisation
- members of visiting forces
- diplomats
- members of religious communities
- people resident in a hostel or night shelter
If there are two adults over 18 years old living in a property, and one of them is included in the above list, a 25% discount still applies. However, a discount will not apply if there are three or more adults and only one of them is included in the list.
Application forms for all the above discounts are available to download.
If your bill shows a discount to which you are no longer entitled, you must inform us stating the date from which the discount should end, and why.
Second Home Discounts
If you have a second home in Craven you can apply for a Second Home Discount of 10%. However, if the property is specifically job related, for instance when a publican is required to live on the premises, the discount will be 50%. A Second Home Discount Application form is available to download.
If you are disabled
Your Council Tax bill may be reduced if you or someone who lives with you is substantially and permanently disabled. A Disability Reduction can be granted if:
- there is a room which is predominantly used by, and required for, meeting the needs of the disabled person, or
- there is a second bathroom and /or kitchen for use by the disabled person, or
- if the disabled person uses a wheelchair indoors
