Emergency Planning

Craven District Council works hard to safeguard communities as far as is possible from unexpected events. To this end we work closely with North Yorkshire County Council Emergency Planning Unit and we are also an active part of the North Yorkshire Local Resilience Forum structures, whose work is governed by both the Civil Contingencies Act 2004 and local needs. See links to North Yorkshire County Council Emergency Planning and to the UK Resilience site.

Craven District’s most commonly faced incident arises through severe weather and we have an active programme to reduce the impact of flooding. For example, on a very practical level one of the activities we carry out is a regular culvert inspection programme. We work closely with, amongst others, the Environment Agency who have responsibilities for main river systems in our District. See links to the Environment Agency and to flooding advice in our own website.

Advice on severe weather and flooding can be found in the attached document, which gives tips you may find helpful. It is not, of course exhaustive and nor is it intended as anything other than a general guide.
