It brings in business for the licensee and for the local economy. However, it can also lead to nuisance from noise, sometimes badly affecting neighbours. Modern amplification and music styles make this an increasing problem.

Legal Controls

We ask organisers to always consult the Environmental Protection Team and the Licensing Section before providing amplified music or entertainment. Many events will need a Public Entertainment Licence, even if they are not licensable, it is best to get advice before you start.

If you are being affected by noise from a premises the council has powers under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, to take action to abate and prevent a "statutory noise nuisance". Abatement Notice can be served and contravention of such a notice will be an offence. Monitoring of the nuisance will need to be undertaken by the Environmental Protection Team and you will be issued with monitoring forms to assist in determining if a statutory noise nuisance exists. Monitoring forms are available by selecting the link in related documents
