Sports Coach and Club Development
Picture of Sports Equipemnt - a vital ingredient in running a successfull sports club

Without voluntary sector Sports Coaches and Sports Clubs there would be very little sport taking place.  They are the life blood of sport.  They often provide the first real experience of sport for young people, they provide a focal point to community life and improve the quality of community life.  This page gives sports coaches and sports clubs details to help their development and future sustainability.

NEW: The Craven Rugby Action Group is putting on a Line Out Referee course in Mid Sept 2010.  Details attached.  Or click here:

Any clubs requireing the minimum standard course should contact Bruce Dinsmore as there is a small budget to put on a Safegaurding Course and a Club for All course.

There are nearly 200 sports clubs in Craven and dozens of active sports coaches.  Week in and week out they provide a very valuable contribution to the community and the individuals within the community.  26% of all volunteering takes place in Sport.  Craven District Council recognises this and works to support clubs and coaches develop.

The page is broken down into Club Development and Coach Development.  Club and Coach development is at the heart of the Governments sports policy; The Game Plan

If Clubs are looking for information on Facility Development or Funding and Development Grants please click on relevant page.  However, please note that to secure funding or to build a new club house Clubs and Coaches will need to show that they have a Development plan in place of how they plan to move forward.  Very few funding agencies give funding to support ongoing costs and maintenance costs.

Club Development

Craven District Council works with National Governing Bodies of Sport and North Yorkshire Sports to support Club Development across Craven. This Club development can range from simply advising a club on what Clubmark is to Facility Development.

It is important to know more about your club if you wish to receive support, advice and funding from Craven District Council Sports Development Service.  In order for us to support you we need to know more about your club.  We do this by asking clubs to complete a Sports Club Questionnaire. See attached document.  This questionnaire will be used in several ways - to inform us of the current number and type of sports clubs in Craven, to update the Craven Sports club database and the "Get Active" A5 booklet  and to use in analysing common issues affecting sports club in Craven.  Please download the questionnaire, print off, fill out and return using the address on the questionnaire.

45  National Governing Bodies have written a 4 year plan for their sport (2009 to 2012).  These "Whole Sports Plans" have be funded directly through Sport England. Each plan will have key aims from Grass roots development through to winning more medals.  As a Sports Club you need to be aware of your governing body and making links to their plans.  One key items will be increasing participation and ensuring quality standards are in place.  The attached Clubmark slide show gives you more details about this development tool.  Also see you NGB website and contact the local or regional officer to discuss your plans.

Sports Forums / Development Groups; One of the key communications systems that have been set up and are various developed in Craven.  These form a crucial part of the Active Craven (community sports network) and are sports specific forums/development groups. Currently there is a Swimming Development Forum, a Rugby Union Forum, Athletics Development Group, Cycle Festival Steering group, a Cricket Forum and a Tennis Development Group.

A good starting place for a Club is to use the Club Development Procedure (see related documents) to assess where they are, where they want to be and how they plan to get there.  This is the basis of good sports development.  Also attached is the Sports Development Fair Play Charter which aims to ensure that standards of equality, respect and fair play are core to the work of sports clubs, coaches and parents. See attached document.

North Yorkshire Sport (NYS) is the County wide Sports Partnership that was set up in 1998 to deliver on the Active Sports programme and the Youth Games.  Since 1998 NYS has been busy delivering on the above.  Some clubs and coaches in Craven have benefited but the future countywide co-ordination of the NGB Whole Sport plans will be through NYS.

In 2003 the Government changed the law to allow sports club parity with charitable organisation.  The Community Amateur Sports Club scheme was launched between the charity commission and the inland revenue to give clubs the full details of what CASC is and how they club become a registered CASC.  In 2007 the Council offered several key sports clubs support in becoming CASC.

Equality - Clubs should make themselves aware of equality issues.  Sport has traditionally been the preserve of white middle class men.  Sports clubs need to aim at ensuring that their club membership reflect the community within which it lives in.  So is your club membership made up of over half women and girls?  Do you cater for disabled people live near the club - Who are you discriminating against.  North Yorkshire Sport Equity policy sets a good example for you to follow.  See attached document.  Also Sports club need to be aware of the Disability Discrimination Act which places a duty on all of us to provide a service that makes "reasonable adjustment" to meet the needs of disable people

If Sports Club are looking to employ a sports coach please see the attached file Coaching and the Law.

Coach Development

As with Club development Coaches in Craven need to be aware of the currant drive to ensure quality systems are in place.  Ideally you should hold a recognised National Governing Body qualification.  See your relevant governing body website for details.  If you do not hold a qualification then you could be at risk.  The attached Coaching and the Law slide show gives you more details on the following matters;

  1. Liability
  2. Negligence
  3. Duty of Care
  4. Standards of Care
  5. Contractual Issues
  6. Statutes - the law of the land and other statutes
  7. Disciplinary issues
  8. Working with Children and Child Abuse
  9. Risk Assessment

The Government is looking to professionalise Sports Coaching and the Coaching Task Force report outlines a number of issues and initiatives to address this matter.  There are currently five areas being developed:

  1. Community Sports Coach Scheme
  2. National Coaching Certificate
  3. Coach development officers
  4. Research and data collection
  5. Long Term Athlete Development resources for coaches and coach managers

Visit the Sports Coach UK website for full details

To help Club Coaches and Volunteers develop your skills there is a ongoing series of Sports Coach UK courses and Running Sport  Courses.  See the attached Running Sports  document for details.  The course that we run are;

  1. Good Practice and Child Protection*
  2. Equity in Your Coaching*
  3. Valuing Volunteers
  4. Club for All*
  5. Sports facility Development.

Please contact the Sports Development Officer for up to date details about these courses.

Clubs wishing to gain the NGB club accreditation scheme such as Clubmark will need to have a coach that has attended  the * courses.

As discussed above 45  NGB's have written a 4 year plan for their sport.  These "Whole Sports Plans" have the principles of the Long Term Athlete Development Model (LTAD) underpinning the player performance pathway.  This is a model of how each sport sees the progression of a young person taking up their sport and then moving through the different stages to becoming a world champion athlete.

The LTAD was originally developed in Canada by Istvan Balyi see attached document for original research.  It has been approved by several leading sports bodies in the UK for NGB's to write up their own Sports LTAD.  Please see your NGB's website for more details.

The Sports Development Service has gained Quest accreditation (UK Quality Scheme for Sport and Leisure) with a score of 85% leading to an "Excellent" rating.  This represents one of the highest scores in the UK.
