If you are intending to undertake building work you need to be aware of Building Control Regulations. A Building Regulation application is required for most building work. We have put together the following guidance to help you through the process.

The purpose of the Regulations is to guarantee the health, safety and welfare of anyone using a building. The Regulations are also used to make sure buildings conserve fuel and power.

New building works, with limited exceptions, must meet the minimum standard set out in the Building Regulations. Building Control Surveyors check that the work meets the standards, from start to finish.

If you are having construction or refurbishment work done to your commercial premises, you will have duties under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007 and may also need to notify the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

You are required to notify Building Control when the works are due to commence and also at the relevant stages of development, you can do this by using the Site Inspection Request form or by the details shown on contact us.

In addition to building control, the department has other responsibilities, including the control of dangerous structures, demolitions and promoting accessibility and facilities for disabled people.

Please visit Building Control Useful Information for the more information.

To see if your work falls within the Craven District you can download the Building Control Area Map.

Your proposals may also require planning permission and if you have not already done so, you should make enquiries with Craven District Council’s Planning Service, or the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority.
