This study is an assessment of the amount of land within the existing settlement limits, that could potentially come forward for residential development up to 2016. Please click here to download the 2003 Urban Potential Study. To view associated maps of Urban Potential Sites please contact the Planning Policy team for a hard copy.
The Urban Potential Sites are monitored and reported on a bi-monthly basis to check their planning status. Since the Study was first published in 2003, a number of the sites included in the final assessment have been developed. The spreadsheet below shows the current status of all the Urban Potential Sites, and includes details on which have been developed, which have planning consent, and which remain available:
The number of houses that could be provided on the remaining undeveloped sites is counted in the Council's Housing Position Statement, which illustrates the Council's five-year supply of suitable sites for housing development. The most recent Housing Position Statement is available on the Local Development Framework webpage.
The Council has commissioned a group of consultants to carry out a Strategic Housing and Employment Land Availability Assessment for the District. This will act as an update to the Urban Potential Study. For further information on the Strategic Housing and Employment Land Availability Assessment please see the Background Studies page of the website.
