SUPPLEMENTARY PLANNING GUIDANCE ON RURAL LIVE / WORK UNITS

The Council's new Planning Guidance on Rural Live/Work Units was approved by Policy Committee on 28th October 2009.

The Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG) provides guidance on both the conversion of traditional buildings, such as barns, to live/work units and the construction of new build live/work units within the Craven District outside of the National Park.

The Council's Saved Local Plan includes policy EMP9 on the conversion of rural buildings to live/work units and a number of traditional rural buildings have been converted and retained in this way.  This SPG provides further information on how policy EMP9 should be implemented as well as answering a number of common queries raised with regard to live/ work developments.  It will be used in the determination of planning applications to ensure high quality developments are delivered.

The SPG is intended to be used by:

  • Owners of buildings or sites, who are thinking of developing a live/ work unit
  • People who are thinking of buying a live/ work unit
  • Architects and planning professionals acting on behalf of developers
  • Craven District Council Elected Members and Officers
  • Any other groups of people or professionals who are interested in live/ work units.

Public Consultation on the SPG
A draft of the Live/ Work SPD was published for a period of public consultation, which ran from Friday 3rd April to Friday 15th May 2009.  The draft was then amended to take account of the comments received during the public consultation and presented to Members of the Craven Spatial Planning Sub-Committee in August 2009.  Further changes were made in response to comments made at the Spatial Planning Sub-Committee meeting, and the final draft of the SPG was approved by the Council's Policy Committee on 28th October 2008.

A Consultation Statement has been produced which gives details of the public consultation, lists the comments received during the consultation and indicates how the draft guidance was amended in response to those comments.  To view the Consultation Statement please click here.
