Sustainability Appraisal
Sustainability Appraisal
All LDDs within the Local Development Framework folder are subject to Sustainability Appraisals, or SA.

Sustainability Appraisals will be used at every stage of the plan-making process in order to ensure that documents achieve sustainable development. 'Sustainable development' means development which meets the needs of today without compromising the needs of future generations. Sustainability Appraisals will assess the environmental, economic and social merits of each LDD.  An explanation of the stages involved in the SA process is set out below.

 

Stage A
The first stage of the Sustainability Appraisal for each LDD is the production of a Scoping Report. 

This report:

  1. Details the baseline data for the District (i.e. the social, environmental and economic issues in the plan area);
  2. Establishes a Sustainability Framework against which the issues and options of all the LDDs will be tested to verify their sustainability;
  3. Decides the assessment methods to be used throughout the SA process; and
  4. Sets out the structure and contents of the final SA Report, which will accompany the LDD when it is adopted. 

Stage B: SA of Issues and Options;
 
Stage C: SA of Preferred Options and preparation of draft SA Report; and 

Stage D: SA of Submission Document and preparation of final SA Report.

Craven District Council commissioned Land Use Consultants to carry out a joint Sustainability Appraisal and Strategic Environmental Assessment (SA/SEA) of the Core Strategy Documents.
