Craven is renowned for its small market towns and attractive villages, which contribute so much to the area's interest and character. It is important to protect this rich built heritage from inappropriate development.
The Conservation Area Appraisals for Skipton, Settle and Giggleswick are now complete and were approved by Council Members in October 2008. To view the Appraisals please follow the links by clicking on the name of the settlement above.
Listed Buildings
English Heritage controls the listing of buildings and structures of special interest. There are 868 listed buildings of special architectural or historic interest in the plan area (outside the National Park). The document below contains details of all of these buildings, including the date of the listing and a short description of the features of interest.
To find out if a building is listed please call a member of the Planning Policy Team on 01756 706427 or send an email to ldf@cravendc.gov.uk.
Listing gives a building legal protection from demolition and alterations which would destroy historic features or affect its character. Any works to a listed building will require planning permission. Please click here to view the Development Control pages for information and guidance on applying for Listed Building Consent.
For further information on Listed Buildings, including details of how buildings are selected for listing, and advice for owners of listed buildings please click here to visit the English Heritage web pages.
Conservation Areas
Conservation Areas are designated by the Local Authority in order to protect and enhance the character of areas of architectural or historic interest.
There are 31 Conservation Areas in the Craven District, all of which are listed below. The Conservation Areas listed are for settlements that fall outside the Yorkshire Dales National Park, but in some cases the Conservation Areas extend into the National Park for settlements on the border.
Any development within the Conservation Area must be in keeping with the special character of the area. For further information on applying for planning consent or carrying out tree work within the Conservation Area please click here to view the Development Control pages.
Conservation Area Appraisals
Conservation Area Appraisals are carried out to asses the boundaries of the Conservation Area, identify areas for improvement and enhancement and set out actions for future works. Appraisals must be carried out in line with guidance issues by English Heritage. A copy of this guidance is available to download from this page.
