There are three linked Conservation Areas in Skipton: the historical core of the town (Central); Middle and New Town (Skipton South); Gargrave Road (Skipton West). The Central Conservation Area was designated in 1960 and Skipton South and West in 1991.
An appraisal of all three areas has been undertaken by two Historic Buildings Consultants: Susan Wrathmell and David Blackburn on behalf of the Council.
The Appraisals were approved by Council Members on the 7th October 2008, and will now be used to inform new policies in the emerging Local Development Framework, as well as assisting the Development Control team in the determination of planning applications within the Conservation Areas.
The Appraisals and accompanying maps can be downloaded by using the links below.

Please note, Map 4 showing the position of Skipton within the Craven District can be found in Section 2 of the Main Appraisal Document.
A draft of this Conservation Area Appraisal was published in April 2008 for public consultation. Members of the public were invited to give their views on the features that contribute to the unique character of Skipton and give ideas for how the Conservation Areas could be enhanced. The responses made during this time were considered during the preparation of the final Appraisal.
