A Brief History and What We Do
The Craven Crime Reduction Partnership came into being after the introduction of the Crime & Disorder Act 1998.

This act was introduced to improve crime reduction levels further.  It was believed that local authorities, public and private sector organisations and the community itself, could work with the police to reduce crime.

During 1998, Craven District Council, North Yorkshire Police and North Yorkshire County Council, came together and formulated the partnership.  A Constitution was adopted and since that time North Yorkshire Police Authority, North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service and the North Yorkshire & York Primary Care Trust have also become partners.

As well as financial support from our statutory partners, we receive grant funding from the Home Office, via Government Office for Yorkshire & Humber.  This grant is called the Safer & Stronger Communities Fund and is used to help tackle problems in the community identified in our Strategy.

The Partnership Board has the overall responsibility of achieving our aims and objectives identified in our Strategy.  In order to do this, we have established a close working relationship with the North Yorkshire Drug Action Team (DAT) to tackle issues relating to the misuse of drugs and to provide guidance to rehabilitate drug users.

Our Partnership is also represented on Craven District Council's Local Strategic Partnership (LSP).  The LSP is responsible for agreeing and ensuring the implementation of the Community Strategy and Action Plan.  Under Aim 4 - Good Health and Social Well-being - of the Community Strategy, the Craven Crime Reduction Partnership is responsible for

  1. reducing the levels and impacts of domestic burglary, other burglaries, autocrime, violent crimes, drugs crimes, anti-social behaviour and retail theft by working in partnership.
  2. working in partnership to develop projects to address drugs and alcohol misuse in the District, including innovative approaches, preventative and treatment measures.
  3. developing a range of projects to engage young people at risk of offending, through multi-agency working, and linking to strategies for health, housing, employment, education, and crime and disorder.

The partnership has been successful in achieving many of its aims as indicated in the 2003 Crime Review, and helped partners and communities with a variety of projects.
