What is Supporting People?

Supporting People is government funding that pays for housing-related support services to help people live independently in the community

Who does Supporting People help?

  • People with learning disabilities
  • People with mental health problems
  • Vulnerable young people
  • Homeless People
  • Older people who need support
  • People with physical disabilities
  • Offenders or people at risk of offending
  • People with drug or alcohol problems
  • People escaping domestic violence
  • Travellers

How does Supporting People help?

Supporting People pays for a variety of different services which might include:

  • Helping you with managing your money and other independent living skills
  • Helping you claim benefits and fill in forms
  • Having a lifeline or call for help alarm system
  • Having a regular visit from a warden
  • Providing temporary accommodation in an emergency.

These services could be in your own home, or in supported accommodation like a hostel, refuge or sheltered housing and can be for a short time or more long term.

How does Craven District Council link with the work of Supporting People?

Craven District Council are represented on the:

a)  Supporting People Commissioning which has overall responsibility for the Supporting People Programme in North Yorkshire.

b) Supporting People Partnership Group which advises the Commissioning Body and Administering Authority on all policy and practice issues and makes recommendations regarding the commissioning of Supporting People services.

c) Elected Members Group which is made up of an elected representative or board member from each of the partnership organisations. It advises the Supporting People Partnership Group and Commissioning Body and acts in a scrutiny role.

Who is the Administering Authority?

North Yorkshire County Council is the Administering Authority which has responsibility to implement the Supporting People programme in accordance with the strategy and annual plan determined by the Commissioning Body.
