Abandoned Vehicles should be reported to the Environmental Health department on 01756 706355.
Aerosols can be placed in the blue bin as part of our kerbside recycling scheme, or can be taken to your local recycling bring site. Please remove caps, and make sure that all air has been taken out.
Aluminium Cans see Cans

Ammunition or Explosives should be reported to the police straight away.
Animal Bedding from herbivores, such as rabbits, horses and birds can be composted. All other bedding should be securely double wrapped and placed in your domestic bin.
Animal Droppings such as dog and cat droppings can be placed in your rubbish bin. Please make sure that it is securely wrapped before disposing of it. You can also place dog droppings in one of the dog waste bins situated around the District.
Antifreeze donate to a neighbour, or local mechanic/garage. North Yorkshire County Council can also arrange a collection of various hazardous materials. Please contact 01609 532512 or see Hazardous Waste
Appliances see Electrical Appliances and White Goods.
Asbestos can be taken to your nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre for disposal. Alternatively, contact a local asbestos contractor.
Ash
- Coal please place COLD ash in your domestic bin for disposal.
- Wood ash is excellent for placing around the garden as a soil improver, as it contains valuable minerals, or place it in your compost bin or heap, in small quantities.

Bathroom Furniture (if in good condition) could be re-used by selling it through the free ads in your local paper or contact a local salvage merchant. Alternatively, can be placed in the general waste skips at your nearest Household Waste Recycling Centres.
Batteries can now be recycled at Council offices (these include mobile phone, household, watch and rechargeable batteries). Alternatively batteries can be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centres for recycling Please use rechargeable batteries whenever possible. Though these may be more expensive to buy up front, you will save in the long run.
Beds can be re-used by donating to charities or local organisations, however please check first that they are able to take them. Also see Bulky Waste and Freegle
Bed linen in good condition can be taken to the local charity shops. Any clean, bed linen can be recycled by putting it one of the textile banks across the District.
Bicycles local cycle shops will be able to repair and service your bike and often will purchase your unwanted bicycle for reselling. If the bicycle is irreparable, it can be put into the scrap metal container at one of the Household Waste Recycling Centres.
Board Games can be passed onto friends and family or donate to a hospital, playgroup or charity shops if in good working order.
Books can be placed in one of the book banks (if in good condition) for re-use. Alternatively, donate them to your local charity shops, jumble sales and schools or sell them to second hand book shops. Books can be borrowed from your local library or from a friend/relative or can be bought from second hand shops and charity shops.
Boots see Shoes
Bricks can be re-used in the garden for paths, patios, edging raised beds and supporting water butts or can be advertised for sale locally. Alternatively, bricks can be placed into the rubble container at your nearest Household Waste Recycling Centres.
Brita Filters see Water Filter Cartridges
Brushes can be given a second life by trimming the bristles of softened brushes with a pair of scissors. Worn out toothbrushes and washing up brushes can also be saved and used for DIY jobs and cleaning. Dispose of worn out brushes in your refuse bin.
Bubble wrap re-use to wrap items before sending through the post. Use it to transport breakable items when travelling or moving house. Use it to wrap delicate plants to protect from frost.

Bulky Waste e.g. beds, fridges, wardrobes, household appliances can be collected for a charge by the Council. To arrange a collection, please contact Customer Services on 01756 706203 or see Bulky Waste Collection Scheme page. Alternatively, you can take them to one of the Household Waste Recycling Centres free of charge.

Cameras use the second-hand market offered by some camera shops or advertise for sale locally. Also see Disposable Cameras.
Cans such as food (steel) and drink (aluminium) cans, biscuit/confectionery tins and metal tin and can lids can be placed in the blue bin as part of our kerbside recycling scheme. Alternatively, they can be recycled at recycling bring sites across the district.
Car Batteries can be recycled at one of the Household Waste Recycling Centres
Car Boot Sales sell your unwanted items and earn money whilst reducing the waste you throw away.
Car Oil see Engine Oil
Cardboard boxes can be used for storage. Smaller boxes, packaging and rolls can also be donated to nurseries and primary schools for play material. Toilet roll middles and other un-inked cardboard can be cut up and added to your compost bin or heap. Flattend cardboard can also be placed in blue bags as part of our kerbside recycling scheme or in paper recycling banks across the District.

Carrier bags re-use your old carrier bags when ever possible. Sainsbury's offer one pence per bag to all customers reusing their old carrier bags or try using ‘bags for life’. Reusuable bags are available to purchase for £1 each at Town Hall, Skipton and Town Hall, Settle. Both Tesco and Morrisons in Skipton have recycling facilities for carrier bag.
Cassettes sell them or take to a charity shop.
Cat Droppings see Animal Droppings
Cat litter try to buy biodegradable cat litter made from recycled paper. One brand called Bio-Catolet Cat litter is available from some pet shops. Cat litter can be composted, but cat faeces could attract unwanted pests so it is advisable to remove this first.
Catalogues can be recycled using the blue bags as part of our kerbside recycling scheme, alternatively can be placed in any of the paper recycling banks across the District.
CD’s can be donated to schools, community groups or local charity shops for re-use.
Cellophane genuine cellophane is biodegradable and can be composted. Most transparent wrapping material is not related to cellulose but is in fact polypropylene and not biodegradable. This must be placed in your refuse bin. Why not use sealable plastic containers for storing sandwiches and food.
Ceramics and China can be donated to your local charity shop. Please do not place into bottle banks, as it can not be recycled with glass. Broken ceramics and china helps drainage when placed at the bottom of plant pots or alternatively should be wrapped in newspaper and placed in your domestic bin for safe disposal.
Christmas trees real Christmas trees can be recycled at one of the Household Waste and Recycling Centres. For properties included on the Garden Waste Scheme, Christmas trees can be put into the brown bin for compost.
Cleaning Fluids use household cleaners from natural products. This will avoid the need to dispose of any hazardous chemicals. For advice on disposal, please contact the disposal authority North Yorkshire County Council on 01609 532512.

Clinical Waste please contact Waste Management Services for advice on 01756 706205. If you are a Business, you will need to look in the Yellow Pages or the telephone directory under 'Waste Disposal' for a contractor.
Clocks/Watches if in working order, try and sell them at a car boot or jumble sale, or donate to local charity shops.
Clothing and Textiles (i.e. clothes, bed linen, curtains, sheets) can be placed into any of the textile banks for recycling. The textiles placed in the banks are sorted out and good condition items will be passed onto charities and poor conditioned items will be recycled, for example made into stuffing for pillows.
Coins including foreign currency (even if it is no longer valid in Europe) can be donated to many charity shops. Just go into any charity shop and hand in your coins or foreign currency to a member of staff.

Computers Many charities and organisations refurbish computers and give them to local communities or send them to developing countries to help bridge the technology gap. Try www.donateapc.org.uk or www.computeraid.org who will accept donations from individuals. Oxfam will only accept old but working PC's to help raise valuable funds from businesses and organisations. Computer Games can be swapped with friends or return to a game shop who may offer part exchange.
Cookers see White Goods
Cooking Oil can cause problems for the environment if not disposed of properly. Please do not put oil down surface drains as it can contaminate drinking water and can be harmful to wildlfe. For advice on disposal, please contact the disposal authority North Yorkshire County Council on 01609 532512.

Disposable Cameras avoid buying disposable single-use cameras. Not all film developers undertake to recycle them. If you have got a disposable camera, check that the film developer promises to recycle the remains. Also see Cameras

Doors try stripping doors and renovating existing doors.
DVD’s rent them to save you space and money. Take unwanted DVD’s to charity shops or try selling them on.

Egg boxes can sometimes be returned back to the shop or farmer for re-use. Donate to schools or playgroups for play scrap. Very good as biodegradable seed pots or add to your compost. Alternatively, cardboard egg boxes can be placed in blue bags as part of our kerbside recycling scheme.
Egg shells can be added to compost heaps. Use as slug and snail deterrent around your favourite plants.
Electrical Appliances such as televisions, computers, toasters, fridges and freezers can all be recycled at your nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre where they will be re-used or passed to scrap metal merchants. You can also arrange a collection for these type of items through the Bulky Waste Collection Service on 01756 706203. If in good working condition, advertise on Freegle or sell to a second hand shop. Charity shops often accept smaller items, but it is advisable to check first.
Energy efficient light bulbs use less electricity than conventional bulbs and last for up to 12 times longer so they have to be changed less often. For more energy saving tips, visit www.est.org.uk

Envelopes re-use good envelopes with new address labels. This can save you money and also reduces waste. You can also recycle envelopes (excludes window type envelopes) by placing them in blue bags as part of our kerbside recycling scheme or placed in paper banks across the District.

Feathers can be composted, as they are a good source of nitrogen.

Garden Tools if in good working condition and has value, try selling them in a locak free advertising newspaper. You could also pass tools on to a friend or take them to a car boot sale or your local jumble sale. Instead of buying tools, why not hire them.

Magazines can be placed in blue bags as part of our kerbside recycling scheme, alternatively, can be placed in any of the paper recycling banks across the District.
Medicines must not be flushed down the toilet or throw in the refuse bin. Please take to your local pharmacy who will dispose of them safely, free of charge.
Metal unwanted metals can be taken to one of the Household Waste Recycling Centres and place in the metal skip for recycling.
Milk Bottles (plastic) can be recycled in your blue bin, alternatively, can be placed at any of the plastic recycling banks across the District. Please remember to wash out and squash before placing them into the plastic bank.
Mirrors can be sold, if unbroken.
Mobile Phones many mobile shops will take old phones for recycling. Tesco stores will give £5 to charity or give you 250 clubcard points and a £2.50 donation to a charity for every phone they receive. Envelopes are available in the stores to post your phone free of charge. The charities to benefit are Alzheimer's, NCH and Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Oxfam, Reedem and Scope will also accept your old mobiles and chargers. Please contact them direct to find out how to donate.

Some families fill more than half a bin with disposable nappies, all of which go to landfill and could take hundreds of years to decompose. Paint solvent based paints (i.e. gloss paint) can be collected by North Yorkshire County Council on 01609 532512. Water based paints (i.e. emulsion paint) can be taken to a Household Waste Recycling Centre. Dried tins of water based paint can be placed in your usual refuse green bin.

Plastic Bottles can be placed in the blue bin for recycling. We will only accect two different types on our kerbside recycling scheme which are:
- High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) bottles is typically made into milk, juice and detergent/conditioner bottles and may have code ‘2 HDPE’ or ‘2 PE-HD’ embossed on the base or printed on the label.
- Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) bottles are typically made into drinking and mineral water bottles. These bottles usually have a slight colour tint and a noticeable hard, moulded dimple on the bottom of the bottle and, in the case of fizzy drink bottles, a flower-shaped base. The bottles may have a code ‘PET 1’ or ‘1 PETE’ embossed on the base or printed on the label.
Types, 1, 2, 5, 6 are excepted at our plastic banks across the District.

Radios wind up radio’s do not require any batteries or mains electricity, therefore have less impact on the environment. Visit www.naturalcollection.com for details.
Rain Water can be collected with a Water Butt and use on your garden. Also see Water Butts

Records, tapes, CD’s can all be sold, if in good condition.
Refuse Collection is now collected on an Alternate Weekly basis. Residual waste is collected on alternate weeks to paper and cardboard recycling. Glass, cans and plastic bottles are collected every 4 weeks. Please ensure your wheeled bin/sacks are available for collection from 7.00am on your collection day. If you are unable to place the wheeled bin out for collection yourself, you can then apply for assistance on 01756 706203.

Telephones rented BT phones can be returned to any BT Shop. Unwanted working phones can be sold to second-hand shops.

Televisions and Monitors can be recycled at one of the Household Waste Recycling Centres. They can also be collected by the Bulky Waste Collection Service, where they will be taken for recycling. If in good working condition, why not try and sell them or advertise them on Freegle.

Video Tapes in working order can be re-used by giving it to a friend, selling it to a second-hand shop or by donating it to a charity shop or jumble sale. Local libraries also rent out videos at a much cheaper rate.

Water Butts can be purchased from most DIY stores or contact your water supplier for their latest offers on water butts.
Water Filter Cartridges by BRITA can now be recycled at the following high street stores: Robert Dyas, Argos and Cargo. For more information about this scheme please contact BRITACare on 0844 742 4800. Please check with the manufacturer or supplier as some offer a free-post return service and will recycle the cartridges.
Weedkiller see Hazardous Waste.

Wooden Doors can be recycled if taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centres and placed in the wood skip.
White Sprit (Thinner) If clean, use or pass on to someone who can use it. For very small amounts, let it evaporate in open air. Sprinkle on rags to speed the process. If dirty, look for a waste disposal company in the yellow pages. Also see Hazardous Waste.

Wrapping paper can be re-used as wrapping paper for different presents. If damaged or un-useable, this can be recycled in your blue bags or paper recycling banks across the District.
