Image of Yorkshire Dales LogoThe Yorkshire Dales is a fantastic blend of spectacular landscapes, outstanding cultural heritage, outdoor activities and endless ways to enjoy a holiday or a great day out.

Craven District lies within the southern part of the Yorkshire Dales and has some of the finest scenery in the world. The district is not only home to a large part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, but also a small piece of the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, historic market towns and traditional villages.

Every year visitors are drawn to the unique splendours of our Dales' landscape. The contrasting silver grey limestone, heather-clad moors, ancient broadleaved woodlands and lush green meadows not only support local tourism and non-tourism related businesses and agriculture, but also provide a home for a wide variety of flora and fauna.

The Council has recognised the important contribution that tourism makes to the local economy and the strength of using the Yorkshire Dales brand to attract visitors to the area. We are therefore a partner in the successful Yorkshire Dales Joint Promotions Initiative (YDJPI), which not only works with local Dales’ businesses that rely on visitors coming to the area, but also promotes the Yorkshire Dales brand nationally and internationally via the Yorkshire Dales Tourism team based in Settle.

The Council is committed to the principles of sustainable tourism development, which we have defined as maximising the economic contribution of tourism and tourist activities to increase revenue and jobs, whilst finding ways to reduce tourism’s social impacts on local people and conserving the environment upon which our businesses, and therefore our communities, depend now and for future generations.
