Trading Standards
North Yorkshire County Council Trading Standards service provides advice for businesses throughout North Yorkshire and is responsible for the enforcement of a variety of legislation covering the safety, descriptions and pricing of products and services.

The service works in the following specialist teams:

  • Business compliance (incl. food and animal health)
  • Consumer services
  • Enforcement, intelligence and prosecution process
  • Fraud and financial investigations

We rely on the thousands of consumers who make complaints about traders or their products & services to us via Consumer Direct each year. The valuable information  this gives us enables us to target our advice and other enforcement activities at the traders who are trading unfairly or unlawfully. We also work with community groups and others to protect the interests of consumers and residents, for example by setting up 'No Cold Calling Zones'. Consumer Direct provides advice for North Yorkshire residents and can be contacted on the number given below or via email

We aim to ensure that the service is run with efficiency and care. We set ourselves targets for dealing with service requests and these are monitored regularly. Details of our policies and standards can be found in the document section below. If you feel that we have not achieved these standards please let us know.

We have recently re launched our email 'newsflash' service for businesses. Subscribers to this system will receive emails notifying them of the latest scams aimed at businesses together with updates concerning new legislation relevant to their trade sector.
