Identifying Future Development Sites

The Local Development Plan will designate sites throughout the District (outside the Yorkshire Dales National Park) for development and protection up to 2026. There is now an opportunity to suggest sites to the Council to be considered for future development.

The Council first put out a 'call for sites' in 2005 and to date approximately 300 sites have been submitted to the Council for consideration. These sites will be assessed to determine their potential for development.

If you would like to suggest a possible development site please supply the following information to the Planning Policy Team using the contact details provided on this page.

  •  A site location plan with the land/buildings you would like considering clearly outlined (preferably in red);
  •  A brief letter indicating which use you would like the land to be considered for;
  • The name and address of the site owner (if known).

You do not need to own the land in question, but land cannot be developed without the owners consent and the Council will be contacting land owners to make sure they want their land to be considered.

At this stage no decisions have been made about which sites will be allocated, or the likely land uses of the final chosen sites.

The Council's Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment will be a first look at all the sites that have been put forward for development. It will assess how suitable the sites may be for development and see if there are any constraints on the sites which may stop development (for example, a high risk of flooding). For more information, please see the Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment page.
