Parking for Blue Badge holders

The Blue Badge scheme is a European scheme of parking concessions for people with severe walking difficulties who travel either as drivers or passengers.

The scheme also applies to registered blind people, and people with very severe upper limb disabilities who regularly drive a motor vehicle but are unable to operate all or some types of parking meter.  This scheme is effectively a replacement for the orange badge scheme.

In North Yorkshire, the County Council administers the Blue Badge scheme on behalf of the Department for Transport.  In order to achieve a consistent approach, all blue badges for North Yorkshire residents are issued from the customer services centres in Northallerton.  Staff adhere to criteria and rules laid down by the Department for Transport.   Information on eligibility criteria and application forms can be found on the County Council website.

Parking regulations for blue badge holders in Craven have changed from January 4, 2016.

Blue badge holders have previously been allowed to park for three hours without charge, provided they parked in designated blue badge parking spaces.

From January 4, blue badge holders will have to pay for a ticket on arrival, which will then allow for an additional hour on top of the usual time, and an extra 30 minutes in pop-and-shop spaces.

Blue badge holders will still be entitled to park on-street on single or double yellow lines for up to three hours, except where there is a ban on loading or unloading.

They can also park for free and for as long as they need to at on-street parking meters and on-street pay and display machines, unless there is a traffic sign specifying a time limit for holders of blue badges.

Current Pay & Display charges are displayed on the tariff boards adjacent to the Pay & Display machines in each car park.
