Registering a death

Death should be registered in the district in which it takes place within five days of the date of death. Upon receipt of all required information pertaining to the deceased person a death certificate is issued by the registrar. If the person died in North Yorkshire, you may visit any registration office in North Yorkshire to register the death.

This service is provided by North Yorkshire County Council. All North Yorkshire registration offices operate an appointments system. The registration itself takes about 30 minutes and is free. You can make an appointment to register the death by contacting the relevant registration office.

North Yorkshire County Council also has a service called 'Tell us Once' that can help you inform a number of government organisations at the same time about a death. More information is available in the Tell us Once section in the NYCC website.

For further information about the service in North Yorkshire, please see North Yorkshire County Council Death - registering.
