Festival of Sport and Culture

To celebrate the Torch Relay travelling through Skipton on 24 June 2012, Craven District Council and Skipton Town Council are holding a Festival of Sport and Culture on the High Street between 10am and 3pm, ahead of the torch coming through.

The event will celebrate and showcase the sporting and cultural activities that take place throughout Craven.

There will be a great range of activities and performances, listed below, held by local clubs and schools with something for all ages.

Activities on the High Street (running from 10am to 3pm)

Aire Valley WeightliftingDemonstrations of weightlifting and training along with the chance to be judged on your technique of lifting.
Bradford District Care TrustPromote the work of the Trust and to invite people to get involved in its work by becoming members.
Bradley Cricket Club and Skipton Cricket ClubBowl at the wickets activity.
Cave Rescue Organisation & Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue AssociationParticipants can have a go on a climbing wall and go through a mock cave as well as find out information about the work of the two organisations.
Christ Church CE Primary School and Gargrave CE Primary SchoolSkipping sessions, throughout the day children will showcase their individual and group skipping skills and invite anyone to have a go too. 
Craven Development Education CentreAn information stall with fair trade sporting clothing and equipment. In addition, Olympics quizzes suitable for different age groups will be available.
Craven Dragons NetballShooting competitions - beat the shooter, number of shots in a minute or blindfolded shooting and passing competitions - most chest passes.
Craven Integrated Services Team (NYCC)Focus on ages 0 to 5, series of races using ride on tractors, scooters or mini space hoppers and the parachute game.
Craven Volunteer CentreInformation about sporting and cultural volunteering opportunities in Craven. In addition there will be a question of sport activity - 10 pictures of sports stadia/locations from around the world plus sporting personalities.

Gargrave Indoor Bowls and Hellifield Indoor BowlsGames of indoor bowls using mats in Town Hall.
Pioneer ProjectsA poi making drop in workshop.
Sandylands Sport CentreFootball skills activity based on a simple training exercise to encourage and improve dribbling technique and shooting accuracy.
Skipton Badminton ClubClub members will demonstrate shots and play a game and hit shuttles to any members of the public who wanted to try the sport. There will be a couple of competitions longest rally and aiming shuttles into a bucket.
Skipton Golf ClubChipping golf balls onto a small target area.
Skipton Tennis CentreActivities including fastest serve, most accurate shot and longest rally.
South Craven ScoutsA canoe race game on a Wii game console with two actual canoes in front of the unit that people sit in wearing buoyancy aids and race against each other around a course on the screen.
South Craven Walking 4 Health/ North Craven Strollers/ Skipton Craven WalkersThe group will co-ordinate walks around Skipton, one following the route of the Olympic Torch at 12 noon and 2pm and another walk of 2012 steps at 11am and 1pm. 
St Stephen's Primary SchoolActivities will include shooting balls and bean-bags into targets and scoring points for each success.
Chris Beanlands Tae Kwon Do School of ExcellenceDemonstrations including sparring (like Olympic Tae Kwon Do sparring), breaking techniques, kicks and punches. Visitors can learn how to kick and punch and spar using pads and you can also try plastic breaking boards.
The Mart TheatreInformation stall to provide our brochure and display production photographs
Upper Wharfedale School and AirienteersAn orienteering activity around the High Street.
Wharfedale, Skipton and North Ribblesdale Rugby ClubsUsing a RFU inflatable, the activity will be a passing drill
Yorkshire Dales Sailing ClubVisitors can have a go on the windsurfer training rigs.
Youth Service (NYCC)Promote the Youth Service and the things we can provide/help young people to organise.

Performances

A programme of three performance areas will run throughout the Festival. The list below details all the acts taking part.

Austwick PlayersAn abridged version of the 2012 play "Under Starters Orders" which imagines what would happen if the Olympic Games were relocated to Austwick.
Buckden SingersA performance of singing including a variety of well known pieces in four part harmony.
ClogfestA short display of clog dancing.
Embsay CE Primary SchoolA performance of a Greek inspired dance.
Flagcracker of CravenA morris dance display followed by a chance for the audience to have a go.
Football FreestylerA performance of skills and tricks associated with football.
Greatwood Community Primary SchoolCostumed dance performance including children across the age range of the school.
Helen Green Academy of DanceDisplays of street dance, ballet and freestyle, a chance for anyone to take part in street dance session and a freestyle session where people show us their own routines to win a shirt and dance classes.
Long Preston Endowed VA Primary SchoolPerformance of country dancing, morris dancing and possibly maypole dancing.
The Ramos FamilyPerformance of acrobatics by the whole of the Ramos family.
Skipton Music CentreA big band performance.
Skipton Musical Theatre CoA selection of songs from their last production Stage Screen and Stars and their next production Guys and Dolls
South Craven SchoolPerformances from stomp, contemporary and street dance work, scripted drama work, hula hoop routines, singing, creative movement and much more.
ZumbaA performance of Zumba with the opportunity to have a go.
1623 Theatre Company The Great Shakespearean Workout brings together aerobics, kung fu and tai chi in an interactive fitness session that explores the language and characters of Troilus and Cressida, Shakespeare's only play inspired by the heroic myths of Ancient Greece, birthplace of the Olympic Games.
