Registration - copy certificates

North Yorkshire County Council can provide copies of marriage certificates after the ceremony has taken place and copies of historical marriage certificates for family history research. Requests should be made to the registration office or church that issued the certificate, depending on where the records are kept at the time of the request.

Registration - copy certificates

When you ask for a copy of a certificate for a marriage that took place in a registration office, the registrar will issue this from the register in their custody. This means you can only obtain copies of certificates from the registration office where the marriage was registered. If the register has been transferred to our Harrogate office, you will need to apply there instead.

The contact details for the registration offices in North Yorkshire can be found below.

Unfortunately, we are unable to issue certificates from other local authority registration offices, so you will need to contact the relevant registration district. Application forms may be used to obtain copies of certificates for marriages that have occurred in other areas and should be sent directly to the relevant registration office.

When applying for a copy certificate in North Yorkshire, it is not always necessary to use an application form, but we do need at least the following information:

  • The full name and surname of the persons and any other name they may have been using; and
  • The place and date of the marriage

The more information you can provide the better. Additional information could include:

  • The names of the parents (i.e. mother's maiden name or husband as appropriate);
  • The exact date of the marriage;
  • The exact location of the marriage; or
  • The General Register Office St Catherine's index reference number. This indicates an entry in the register has been made. However, it is worth stressing that whilst this confirms the marriage took place, the reference in the General Register Office (GRO) index is relevant only to GRO searching and does not apply to the records held by us.

This service is provided by North Yorkshire County Council, for further information about their service please see Registration - copy certificates.
