Be a Councillor

Becoming a Councillor presents a real opportunity for you to get involved and influence, as a community leader, what is going on in your area.

You can do this by standing as a candidate to become a councillor for Craven District Council and / or your Parish Council. If you want to put yourself forward as a candidate at an election, you have to be some criteria.  This means that on the day you are nominated, you must be a least 18 years old and be a British citizen, or qualifying citizen of a Commonwealth country, or member state of the European Union.  In addition, you must meet one or more of the following:

  • be registered as a local government elector in the area of the council you wish to stand for; or
  • have been an owner or tenant of any land / premises in the council's area for the 12 months before the day you are nominated; or
  • have your main or only place of work for the last 12 months in the council area; or
  • have lived in the council area for the last 12 months.
  • [Note:  For parish / town councils, there is another criteria you can qualify under, whic is to have lived in the parish or within 4.8 kilometres of it for the last 12 months.]

If you are unterested in becoming a District or Parish councillor (or both), have a look at the Be a Councillor website.  If you are interested in becoming a Parish Councillor only, have a look at The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) or use the Be a Councillor link.  Or you could talk to one of your local Parish Councillors or the Parish Clerk about your interest.

Nomination packs for District Council elections, which are held on the first Thrusday in May every three years from 2013, are available from the Elections Office, Craven District Council, 1 Belle Vue Square, Broughton Road, Skipton, BD23 1FJ, 01756 706241 or elections@cravendc.gov.uk.  The District nomination packs and those for Parish Council are available around seven weeks before the election date from the above office.  You can also get parish nomination packs from the local Parish Clerk.
