Skipton Aikido Club

Aikido is a self-defence and sports-oriented martial art. Tomiki Aikido teaches the student how to avoid the aggressive actions of an attacker and focuses not on punching or kicking opponents, but rather on using their own energy against them; to gain control of them or to throw them away from you .

Aikido

Aikido practice can benefit everyone, male or female, young or old, of any ethnic or national origin. All can enjoy and improve their health and fitness by attending regular and well run classes. Its full and natural body movement has aerobic benefits for all, helping to improve balance, coordination and flexibility. When practiced regularly it will assist in developing a fitter, more supple and stronger body with improved reflexes and reactions.


Self Defence


Aikido is a Japanese martial art practised and perfected by the Samurai Warrior in feudal Japan. The ancient origins and fighting methods go back many centuries, although its principles are still as relevant today. Practised as a sport, Aikido is essentially a non-violent recreational activity which encourages harmony and avoidance of confrontation. Force is never opposed by force. Resolving a conflict quiescently is better for all concerned and students soon learn how to improve their self-awareness, and with the techniques learnt, also grow in self-confidence.


The Principles of Aikido


Aikido principles are based on exploiting the weaknesses of an opponent. Joints, posture, and the mind can all be vulnerable areas when attacked or challenged. In essence Aikido is turning an opponents' power against themselves by using the exact degree of control required to neutralise their energy without inflicting undue harm.
