18/09/2012: Craven Community Champion Awards - The nominations are in!

A panel of judges from key local organisations have assessed over sixty entries made to the inaugural Craven Community Champion Awards.

A short list of nineteen has been chosen by the judging panel from which the winners will be announced.

The Craven Community Champion Awards have been established by Craven District Council, the Craven Herald and the Skipton and Skipton and Craven Rotary Clubs to celebrate the achievements of Craven's communities and recognise the valuable contribution this makes to improving communities and the lives of local people.

The judging panel consisted of:

  • Councillor Chris Habron, Chair of Craven District Council
  • Julian Smith, Ripon and Skipton MP
  • Adrian Braddy, Editor of the Craven Herald
  • Bob Hargreaves and Dave Parker, Skipton and Skipton and Craven Rotary Clubs
  • Mary Waterfall, Craven College
  • Milton Pearson, Craven CVS

Following the judging Julian Smith, MP said "The achievements and commitment demonstrated by the entries to the awards was exceptional and I am pleased to be part of a project that recognises the hugely important contribution that people and organisations make to communities across Craven."

Councillor Chris Harbron, Chairman of Craven District Council continued: "The standards of the entries was very high and it was great to learn about the wide range of community projects and volunteering that goes on across the district. Because of the high calibre of entries received, we have also decided to present a special Judges Outstanding Achievement Award to pay accolade to someone who has made a remarkable achievement in the district."

Editor of the Craven Herald Adrian Braddy said "Judging the awards was a truly uplifting experience, yet we faced an almost impossible task picking winners from so many worthy candidates. The standard of the entries was evidence, if any was needed, of how lucky we are to have so many people in Craven who go that extra mile to make a difference to their community. Hopefully these awards will, in some small way, recognise those efforts."

A special prize evening will be held at Coniston Hotel from 6pm - 9pm on18th October 2012 where the following awards will be presented;

  • Art and Culture Award
  • Carer/ Paid Care Worker of the Year
  • Community Group of the Year
  • Sports Award
  • Volunteer of the Year Award
  • Young Citizen of the Year
  • Citizen of the Year.

Kevin Wharton, President of Skipton Rotary Club, said: "Both of Skipton's Rotary Clubs are delighted to have been able to support this event highlighting the achievements and commitment of people across our area. We're particularly pleased to have been able to sponsor the award for Young Citizen. Young people are our future, but it's good to be able to celebrate the contribution they're making in our communities right now."
