10/10/2012 Safeguarding and Protecting Children Workshop

Following the success of the last workshop in July, Craven District Council is once again putting on a Sports Coach UK 'Safeguarding and Protecting Children' workshop. The workshop takes place on Tuesday 6th November (starting at 6.30pm).

All children deserve to enjoy their sport. This workshop will create a positive sports experience for young people and raise awareness of any telltale signs of abuse and poor practice, as well as give sports coaches and volunteers the tools they need to deal sensitively, appropriately and effectively with any issues should the need ever arise.  Safeguarding and Protecting Children will give sports volunteers the best-practice tools they need to recognise and respond appropriately to issues of safeguarding and child protection. This will increase their confidence and help them create a positive sports experience for young people.

The workshop will help those working or volunteering in sport to provide children and young people with a positive and enriching sporting experience, recognise and respond to the signs and symptoms of child abuse and poor practice, take appropriate action if concerns about a child arise.

There are nearly 3000 sports volunteers in Craven District and many of them are supervising sports activities and coaching young people.  Most of these sports groups have seen an increase in interest in their sport since the Olympics.  This 3 hour workshop will help them understand the issues around safeguarding and equip them with knowledge on how to deal with keeping children safe in their sport. Mr Davidson, Junior Team Coach who attended the July workshop said "the Safeguarding course is an essential part of our club delivering high quality and safe coaching to young people. As one of the youth team managers I learned a lot on the course, which will improve how I coach. At £20 it's also very good value for money".

The workshop is being held at the Craven District Council Offices, Belle Vue Square. To book or enquire about the course please call Bruce Dinsmore on 01756 706391 or email bdinsmore@cravendc.gov.uk.
