Membership of Committees

Councillors are appointed to a range of committees and sub-committees at the start of each council year, which runs from the Annual Council Meeting in May to the Annual Council Meeting in the following May.  

Appointments are made to the following committees:

  • Policy
  • Select (Overview and Scrutiny)
  • Audit and Governance
  • Licensing
  • Planning
  • Standards

The committees make decisions in line with the powers which are delegated to each of them by the Council Meeting and which are set down in legislation.  Information about these powers is contained in word icon Council and Committees' Terms of Reference [86kb] . 

The committees can make decisions only in accordance with the matters for which they are responsible under the delegation.  Major policy and strategic matters are decided by the Council Meeting on a recommendation of the Policy Committee, unless the issue concerns a regulatory matter like licensing policy.
