Elected Representatives

The democratic process operates at a number of levels in the Craven District.  Probably the best known means of election are the direct elections to Westminster and European Parliaments, through to local government bodies, such as North Yorkshire County Council, Craven District Council and local Parish (and Town) Councils.  Also at parish level, there are parish meetings, which consist of the local government electors for the parish concerned.

There are other local organisations, such as the Yorkshire Dales National Park and some health bodies, which carry out public functions, but are not directly elected.

At the moment, the Government is introducing legislation which will mean the the public will, from 2012, directly elect Police and Crime Commissioners for each Police area.
