Unitary Authorities

In some council areas, there is just one primary council, which is often referred to as a unitary authority.  These types of council are responsible for delivering many of the main services to the public, such as education, social services, planning, housing etc.  Good examples of these types of authority are our neighbouring councils of Bradford and Leeds.

In the Craven District, the main services are delivered to the public through both Craven District Council and North Yorkshire County Council.

In both types of council areas, there are usually parish councils and parish meetings, which deliver other services, such as the provision of allotments, recreation grounds etc.  In addition, there are other, non-elected, bodies such as the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority.
