Tributes paid to Councillor Donny Whaites

Craven District Council is paying tribute to Councillor Donny Whaites, the former Council Chairman, who has sadly died.

Cllr Whaites was first elected as a representative for the Settle and Ribblebanks Ward in 2004.

During his time on the Council he served on a number of committees including the Audit, Scrutiny and Policy Committees, whilst externally he represented the Council on a range of groups associated with his ward and surrounding area, including the Settle and Carlisle Railway Development Company, Settle Victoria Hall Trustees, Settle Area Swimming Pool Committee and the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Joint Advisory Committee.

Councillor Richard Foster, Leader of Craven District Council said: "Donny was a thoroughly decent man and a true local Councillor. He was well known across the generations in his local ward, Settle. During his time as Chairman he bought real enthusiasm to his role and always looked for the positive. He even posed in Craven Pool in his chains of office to promote the Chairman's Charity Swim to raise funds for the new A&E department at Airedale Hospital. He was gregarious, outgoing and very friendly. As a result during his year of office he made numerous new friends with other civic heads across the county. He will be missed by many."

Appointed as Chairman of the Council for 2013/14, accompanied by his wife Alice, Cllr Whaites represented the Council and Craven at engagements locally and across the region.

He was born in Stainforth and moved to Settle when he was four. He was married to Alice for more than 40 years and they have two grown up children.

Cllr Whaites owned his own coach company for most of his working life, providing a local bus service and transporting children to school.

Cllr Waites funeral service has been arranged for 1pm on Friday 27th March 2015 at the Holy Ascension Church, Settle ( Settle Parish Church - opposite Whitefriars Car Park ). The church service is to be preceded by a private family cremation service.
