Ants
There are 41 different species of ant living in the UK. The one that causes most problems for people is the garden or black ant (Lasius Niger), which is 3.5 to 5mm long and dark brown to black in colour.
Craven District Council provides a pest control treatment service for both domestic and business complaints considered to be a risk to public health or food safety including rats, mice, cockroaches, fleas and bedbugs.
Pest control treatment services can be arranged by telephoning during normal working hours. Alternatively you can contact us by email or via the electronic form - Apply for Pest Control Services
Officers call by prior appointment and apply safe and effective treatments. If for any reason the problem persists they will return and make every effort to ensure the pest is eradicated.
We don't treat bats, bees, ants, pigeons, squirrels or wasps but we have provided information about these potential pests on our web pages. Information about different pests can be found on the links below.

Bed Bugs
Bed bugs are found world-wide and throughout the UK. They are nocturnal parasitic insects that feed on the blood of humans and other mammals. By day they hide in crevices in beds, furniture, wallpaper and skirting boards etc, emerging when hungry, usually every few days, to feed.
Cockroaches
Cockroaches present a significant health risk and can carry a number of diseases including food poisoning, dysentery, typhoid and polio. The Pest Control Officer can treat cockroaches.
Pigeons
Flocks of pigeons are an increasing feature of many towns and cities. What we don't always see is that pigeons can cause a considerable amount of damage and nuisance where they roost.
Fleas
Fleas are blood-sucking insects of warm-blooded mammals. The most common pest fleas in the UK are cat and dog fleas. There are fleas that infest humans, but because of better sanitation these are becoming increasingly rare. The Pest Control Service can treat flea infestations.
Mice
The Pest Control Service can treat for mice infestations and there is a charge for this service. House mice can live and breed in houses, buildings and other structures such as garden sheds, which give them protection from the cold and wet weather. Although an abundant supply of food is preferable, house mice can survive on relatively poor diets, eating between 3 to 4 grams of food a day and can survive without access to free water.
Rats
Rats are some of the most serious rodent pests in the world. They can carry diseases such as leptospirosis, salmonellosis and campylobacter and cause structural damage to buildings by gnawing and burrowing.
Bats and Bees
Bats and Bees We don't treat bats or bees as they are both protected species and shouldn't be disturbed.
Wasps
The common wasp (Vespula vulgaris) is mostly beneficial, destroying many insect pests to feed the growth of the nest. In autumn, however, after the nest matures, redundant workers flying off in search of fruit and sugary food can become a nuisance.
Squirrels
The common 'pest' squirrel in the UK is the grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis). Grey squirrels build their nests in the forks or hollows of trees, using twigs, leaves and grass. Occasionally nests are made in the roof spaces of houses. Squirrels retire to their nests during wet or cold weather, but remain active throughout the year.
