Single Person Discount Review

Craven District Council is currently undertaking a review of residents who receive a 25% Single Person Discount on their council tax.

Single Person Discount (SPD) is claimed when an adult is the sole adult occupant of the property. Most residents correctly claim the discount but there is a small minority who are attempting to defraud the system. These residents may not have reported a change in their circumstances and may be receiving a discount they are no longer entitled to.

The council will shortly be sending a letter to those residents currently receiving Single Person Discount asking them to confirm their current circumstances.

This will enable the council to keep its records up to date and will also allow residents to report whether there has been a change in their circumstances.

Councillor John Dawson, Craven District Council's Lead Member for Revenues and Benefit, said: "I fully support the review - Craven District Council is dedicated to protecting the public purse and detecting fraud.

"We take council tax fraud very seriously so we are very pro-active in confirming all entitlements to discounts. We would like to thank our residents for their on-going cooperation throughout this exercise."

Failure to respond to the council's letter will result in the Single Person Discount being removed and further investigations may be made.
