Time is running out to nominate your local heroes for the Craven Community Champions Awards

The clock is ticking - let us know if you can think of a local superstar who deserves recognition for their hard work in the community.

The deadline for nominations in this year's Community Champions Awards, run by Craven District Council and the Craven Herald, is November 13, 2016.

The seven awards open for nomination this year are the Arts & Culture Award, Greener Craven Award, Best Community Group Award, Sport and Recreation Award, Volunteer of the Year Award, Young Citizen of the Year Award, and Digital Innovation in the Community Award.

There is also a Citizen of the Year Award, chosen by the judging panel or award sponsor, which is not open for public nomination.

This award will be given to a citizen in recognition of his or her outstanding contributions directly to Craven during the past year; all nominations will be automatically entered into this category.

A spokesman for Yorkshire Housing, which is sponsoring the Citizen of the Year Award, said: "We have chosen to support the Craven Community Awards as these awards recognise and celebrate achievement of local people in improving their own communities and neighbourhoods.

"As the largest social landlord in Craven we see ourselves as a major stakeholder in the communities and neighbourhoods where we operate. We're proud to be sponsoring the Citizen of the Year Award and look forward to celebrating the achievements of all those who help to make their communities stronger."

Last year the Citizen of the Year Award was given to the Volunteer of the Year, Sylvia Merrett, a long-time member of the Craven community and voluntary sector, and Chair of the Craven Mental Health Forum.

The associate sponsor for the awards this year is Henry Boot Developments and each award has been sponsored by a local company, including the Peel Entertainment Group, Angus Fire, Keelham Farm Shop, Craven Swimming Pool, Broughton Hall Estate, Coniston Hotel Country Estate & Spa, Principle Healthcare International and Yorkshire Housing.

Nomination forms are available on the council website www.cravendc.gov.uk/communitychampions or pick one up from any local participating shop or service, library or doctors surgery.

The winners will be announced on January 12, 2017, at the Awards Ceremony to be hosted by the Coniston Hotel and Country Estate at Coniston Cold, near Skipton.

Everyone who has been shortlisted to receive an award will be invited to attend the Award Ceremony.
