What are the current planning policies being used by the Council?

The Council is currently using saved policies from the 1999 Adopted Local Plan the Craven District (outside the Yorkshire Dales National Park). If a planning application is submitted which is clearly contrary to the Local Plan it is unlikely to be granted permission. Planning Guidance has also been produced to clarify the Council's position on other issues which are not covered by policies from the Saved Local Plan.

The National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) produced by Central Government must also be taken into consideration when assessing planning proposals. For the time being, the Regional Planning Policies prepared by the Local Government for Yorkshire and the Humber also form part of the council's Local Plan, though these will soon be removed as part of the Government's plans under the Localism Act.

The Council is currently in the process of writing new, up-to-date policies which will eventually replace those which were saved from the Local Plan. For information on this work please see the Writing New Policies - The Local Development Plan webpages.

  • Adopted Local Plan

Saved policies from the Council's 1999 Local Plan provide the main planning framework for the District (outside the Yorkshire Dales National Park). They include specific policies to control the location and design of development and to protect the heritage and local character of the area. The Local Plan and accompanying Proposals Maps are available to download from this page.

  • Planning Guidance

A number of Planning Guidance documents have been written to set out how the Council will deal with issues which are not covered by policies within the Saved Local Plan, and to add detail to policies within the Saved Local Plan.
