Hedgerow Removal and High Hedges Legislation Summary Hedgerow Regulations 1997 From 1 June 1997 it is an offence to remove most countryside hedgerows.

To get permission to remove a hedgerow, you must notify your local Council in writing - using this notification form. If the authority decides to prohibit removal - it must notify you within 6 weeks. If you remove a hedgerow without permission, you may be prosecuted and have to plant a replacement hedge. High Hedges Legislation

Part 8 of the Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003 introduced controls by local authorities on high hedges that cause light loss to neighbouring properties.

In the first instance you are expected to attempt to negotiate a solution with your neighbour, and the Council will only accept a complaint if it is satisfied that you have made a genuine attempt to do so.
