Free Sunday parking set to launch in Skipton car park

Visitors to Skipton will be able to park free in Cavendish Street car park on Sundays in January and February in a scheme to boost trade in the town.

Craven District Council has agreed the move to support Skipton Business Improvement District's initiative to increase Sunday trading in the town centre.

The Cavendish Street car park will be free between 9am and 6pm every Sunday in January and February 2018. Fees on the other car parks across Skipton and Craven will remain as usual.

Councillor John Dawson, Deputy Leader of Craven District Council, said: "We're pleased that we're able to help Skipton BID with their initiative aimed at encouraging more local residents to use Skipton town centre on Sundays.

"It is hoped the joint initiative will attract more local residents to Skipton Town Centre on what is traditionally a quiet period of the year, and help shoppers to make the most of the High Street.

"Whilst there is no clear evidence that parking charges put people off visiting Skipton on Sundays, we are happy to support Skipton BID in their promotion of the town, particularly in what are traditionally quiet months for traders."

Figures from Skipton BID show that on Saturdays in January and February 2017, footfall in Skipton was 62,567, compared to just 29,260 on Sundays in the same period.

The BID will be launching a promotional campaign in the New Year to increase the awareness of what Skipton Town Centre has to offer. This will include a leaflet promoting the various activities and shops in Skipton Town Centre open on a Sunday, along with advertising in local media.

The results from the initiative in January and February will be assessed and future requests for similar schemes at other times of the year will be considered.
