Craven Leisure's learner pool set to close for refurbishment

Customers at Craven Leisure are being advised that the learner swimming pool will be closed from December 4, 2017, while the moveable floor is replaced.

This essential maintenance has been planned for the quietest time of the year at Craven Leisure, in order to minimise disruption to customers. The learner pool is expected to reopen in late December or early January.

Swimming lessons at the centre will continue at the normal times, but all lessons will take place in the shallow end of the large pool, with swimming teachers adapting their lessons and teaching styles. A lifeguard will be in the water to support the children at all times. School swimming lessons will be adapted in the same way.

Hydro exercise classes will also take place in the main pool, but all other learner pool activities will be suspended while the maintenance takes place.

Lloyd Hancox, Leisure Services Manager at Craven District Council, said: "The moveable floor has served us well for more than 14 years, which is four years longer than their standard predicted life. The new floor will be an upgraded version, with a finish that provides a better grip.

"We apologise to customers for any inconvenience the closure may cause. We have chosen the quietest time of the year for the work, to minimise the disruption caused for swimming lessons.

"We recognise that some parents and children will be a little anxious about doing lessons in the main pool, so we are allocating the shallow end of the pool just for lessons. This is slightly deeper - 10cm - and a little colder but still warmer than other pools in the area.

"In addition, to help put customers' minds at ease we will also put a lifeguard in the water to give immediate assistance if it is needed. Our teachers are also qualified lifeguards so they'll also be on hand to help. Our pool also has a number of pool alarms which can alert a backup team of lifeguards to respond to emergencies and they are on poolside in less than 20 seconds.

"We are hoping to re-open the learner pool in late December to early January. A confirmed date will be announced nearer the time while the works are taking place. If the floor replacement is a smooth process the pool could be reopened within three weeks. We may be able to open the pool early and it may be slightly cooler than usual, but still be perfectly safe to use.

"We will aim to provide regular updates on the progress of the replacement works as they are happening."

The main pool will still be open but space and occupancy may be limited during the swimming lesson times of Monday to Friday from 4pm to 7.30pm and Saturday mornings up to 10am. A price reduction on pool admissions will be given to users during these times.

Paying members of Craven Leisure can use other swimming pools in the area free of charge - Craven Leisure is part of a scheme called the Active Network which gives members free access to 17 leisure centres across the North West.
