Planning - environmental policies

Sustainable Development is defined as development that meets the needs of today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

It is the core principle underlying the planning process - if development is not considered to be environmentally, economically or socially sustainable it should not be allowed.

Sustainable Development is one of the main considerations for planning officers when determining planning applications, and all new policies in the Council's emerging Local Development Plan will be tested to make sure they are in line with the principals of sustainability.  This testing process is known as 'Sustainability Appraisal' and details of the Appraisals which have been undertaken to date can be found on the Sustainability Appraisal  webpage.
