European Union Referendum

The UK Government's date for the referendum on the UK's membership of the European Union is 23 June 2016.

What will the referendum question be?

The Electoral Commission proposed the wording of the referendum question, which has been accepted by MPs:

"Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?"

The options for voters will be:

  • Remain a member of the European Union
  • Leave the European Union

Who will be able to vote?

  • British, Irish and Commonwealth citizens over 18 who are resident in the UK
  • UK nationals who have lived overseas for less than 15 years
  • Members of the House of Lords and Commonwealth citizens in Gibraltar will also be eligible, unlike in a general election
  • Citizens from EU countries (apart from Ireland, Malta and Cyprus) will not be able to vote

DEADLINES FOR POSTAL AND PROXY VOTES

The POSTAL VOTE DEADLINE AND PROXY VOTE DEADLINE have passed:  It is now too late to apply for a postal or proxy vote.  See information below on emergency proxy applications which can be made in strictly limited circumstances.

Emergency Proxies

 Emergency proxies may be appointed for the referendum in any of the following circumstances;

• in the case of a disability (whether a medical condition, illness or otherwise) arising after the deadline for ordinary proxy applications (i.e. after 5pm on Wednesday 15 June)

• if the person is a mental health patient detained under civil powers (i.e. those who are not detained offenders)

• if a person's occupation, service or employment means that they cannot go to the polling station in person and they became aware of this fact after the deadline for ordinary proxy applications (i.e. after 5pm on Wednesday 15 June)

 Application forms must be attested by one of the persons listed on the application forms.Forms MUST be signed but can be scanned and submitted by e-mail to elections@cravendc.gov.uk.

The deadline for Emergency Proxy applications is 5.00pm on Thursday 23rd June.

Key Dates 

  • Overseas Postal votes sent out: around 25th May (If you apply late, your vote may be sent out later than this)
  • Ordinary Postal Votes sent out: around 31st May (If you apply late, your vote may be sent out later than this)
  • Last day to register to vote: 7th June at midnight
  • Last day to apply for a postal vote or to change from a postal vote to a proxy vote: 8th June at 5pm
  • Last day to apply for a proxy vote: 15th June at 5pm
  • Referendum day: 23rd June between 7am and 10pm
