Licences and street trading

Craven District Council is responsible for the control and licensing of an extensive range of activities and businesses in the borough.

  • Alcohol and Entertainment Licence

    A premises licence allows alcohol and entertainment to be present at a premises.

  • Cinema Licence

    Any public performance of a film exhibition is controlled under the Licensing Act 2003

  • Caravan Site Licence

    The Caravan and Control of Development Act 1960 prohibits the use of land as a caravan site unless the occupier holds a site licence that has been issued by us, the local authority.

  • Credit Licence

    Where needed a credit licence must be obtained from the Consumer Credit Licensing Bureau of the Office of Fair Trading under the Consumer Credit Act 1974.

  • Food premises - approval

    The District Council is required to inspect and, where appropriate, grant permission for premises to handle, process and/or manufacture products of animal origin such as meat, dairy, eggs or fish.

  • Gambling Licenses

    Gambling is controlled by the Gambling Act 2005.

  • Hairdresser Licence

    Hair dressing no longer need to be licensed in the Craven District Area.

  • House to House Collections Licence

    It is an offence to conduct a house to house collection without first obtaining a licence from the Council in accordance with the House to House Collections Act 1939 and the House to House Collections Regulations 1947.

  • Registration - motor salvage operator

    To carry out a Motor Vehicle Salvage operation, you must hold a Motor Vehicle Salvage Licence.

  • MOT testing

    Craven District Council's vehicle workshop is accredited to provide independent MOT testing and certification direct to the general public and businesses.

  • Scrap metal site registration

    Craven District Council has a duty to licence Scrap Metal Dealers under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 1964.

  • Second Hand Goods Licence

    A registration certificate, issued by North Yorkshire County Council, is required if a person sells second-hand goods.

  • Sex Shops Licence

    Sex Establishments are required to be licensed under the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1982.

  • Street Collections Licence

    It is illegal in this country to hold a street collection to collect money or sell articles for the benefit of charitable, or other purposes, without obtaining a street collection licence from us.

  • Street trading - illegal

    Monitoring and regulation of street traders to ensure that trading is only taking place under licence from North Yorkshire County Council.

  • Sunday Trading Notifications Licence

    The Sunday Trading Act permits all retail shops to open on a Sunday, however large shops do have their opening hours restricted.

  • Taxi and Hackney Carriage Section

    Everything you will need to complete either a Private Hire or Hackney Carriage Drivers licence

  • Theatre Licence

    The licensing of theatres is now part of the Licensing Act 2003 and as such any premises wishing to show the performance of a play must be licensed

  • Venue for Civil Marriage and Civil Partnerships Licence

    Under the The Marriages (Approved Premises) Regulations 1995 the owner or manager of any venue planning to host civil marriages or other celebratory ceremonies must have a valid licence.

  • Weighbridge Operators Licence

    Trading Standards Officers test the competence of Public Weighbridge Operators and issue a certificate before public weighings can be carried out. Records are kept of all public weighbridges and the locations of the nearest public weighbridges are given on request.
