Corporate Peer Challenge

In June 2012 Craven District Council welcomed the Local Government Association to Craven for an on site peer review.

The Peer Challenge Team is made up of other officers and elected members from the Local Government sector and provides a corporate health check on the Council, feedbacks on the progress the Council has made, looks at systems and processes in place and helps to drive further improvement.

The report acknowledges the challenging time Craven District Council has faced since 2008 but recognises the good progress the Council has made to significantly reshape the organisation, making savings of £2.5m to recover a budget deficit following the Council's own financial crisis and the impact of the Comprehensive Spending Review in 2010.

The report highlights a number of positive achievements including:

  • Working on expansion of rural broadband
  • Investment in Craven Swimming Pool and Fitness centre which has significantly reduced the subsidy needed for the facility
  • A new website
  • Increase in number of affordable homes
  • Engagement with the Youth Council
  • Introducing alternate weekly collections

The team also highlighted a number of areas it believes Craven District Council could improve on:

  • Closer working relationships between Members and officers 
  • Promoting the achievements and initiatives of the Council to the public and partners and members
  • Completing the Local Development Framework
  • Developing a clear and strategic approach to income generation

An action plan has been developed to address those areas raised.
