Sports Development

The Council Sports Development Officer (SDO) offers a range of services that supports community sports organisations, events or individuals.

Craven strategy launch

The Spring 2013 Sports Coach UK Safeguarding workshop is now full.  Another course will be taking place in the Autumn, please contact the Sports Development Officerto register your interest in this course.  

The Sports Development Service consists of the following:

  • Club and Coach Development - the Officer supports clubs and coaches with grants, club development advice.  The main club development work relates to clubs achieving Club mark, a national club accreditation standards.  There are 20 Club mark accredited clubs in Craven.
  • Sports Facility Development - helping clubs develop and improve their own facilities through offering advice, funding, supporting grant applications and by helping clubs with sports development planning.  The Council has helped over 35 sports facility projects across the district since 2000, helping draw down over £12million invested into new or improved sports facilities.
  • Training - the Officer works with a range of partners to provide or signpost people to a relevant training course. This is to help Club and Coach Development and Facility Development. Sports Training courses are listed on the following two web sites: Coaching North Yorkshire or Coaching West Yorkshire.
  • Sports Grants and Funding Support: Full details of this service is listed on the Sports Grants.
  • Sports Event and support - the Officer works closely with sports events to support increasing the number of entrants from the Craven District.  New sports events should contact the Council for advice when planning an event.  The Council also supports the dedicated Craven Events website
  • Partnership working - We work with over 100 Sports Clubs in Craven and have set up or supported sports forums to assist in development.  There are Development Forums in Swimming, Cricket, Athletics and Rugby Union.  We also work through local charity bodies e.g. Settle Swimming Pool in supporting them to deliver swimming.
  • District wide planning -  this includes working on Craven-wide strategic sports issues.  In 2010 the Craven on the Move: Sport and Active Recreation Strategy was revised and updated. This revision covers the 4 years up to the end of 2013. The SDO works with a wide range of partners to work towards delivering the vision and actions of this strategy. 

FANS: Free Access for National Sports People 2013

We offered 14 free membership to Craven Swimming Pool and Fitness Centre for local elite and talented athletes for 2012.  Applications are open for 2013, with a closing date of 10th January 2013.

The Sports Development Service has gained Quest accreditation (UK Quality Scheme for Sport and Leisure) with a score of 85% leading to an "Excellent" rating. 
This represents one of the highest scores in the UK.
