We are responsible for licensing taxis and private hire vehicles, including their drivers and operators. The main aim is to ensure the safety of the public, by ensuring that the drivers, vehicles and operators that they use are safe, reliable and efficient. A licence is required before any person can drive a licensed hackney carriage or private hire vehicle.

Taxi Camera (CCTV)

Taxi Cameras will become a mandatory condition in all currently licensed vehicles from TBC and in all new vehicle applications from 1 January 2021.  The specification and known suppliers can be found on the page, CCTV in Hackney and Private Hire Vehicles.

We are still accepting new applications for drivers. However please note we are unable to carry out knowledge tests during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Once we can resume this process, priority will be given to those who had applications processing prior to the pandemic.

How long does it last?

Once granted, your licence is valid for 3 years.

How much does it cost?

New Driver Application

£265.90 (includes £66.00 Disclosure and Barring Service (CRB) application fee, £12.00 Data Protection Mandate and £14.07 Knowledge Test).

For any additional assessments which drivers must complete, fees will be payable directly to the provider, including: 

Driving Assessment

Safeguarding

English Skills test, if required. 

Relevant Convictions

When submitting an application for a licence to drive a hackney carriage or private hire vehicle you are required to declare any motoring offences and any non motoring convictions or cautions you may have in addition to completing a Disclosure and Barring Service check.  The information received will be treated in confidence.

Any applicant refused a driver's licence on the ground that he/she is not a fit and proper person to hold such a licence has a right of appeal to a Magistrates' Court.

How long does the process take?

The application process normally takes between 1 - 3 months (although this timescale has been significantly affected by the current pandemic).
